Bordered by Roslindale and Hyde Park in Boston’s southwest corner, West Roxbury is an urban neighborhood with a suburban feel. Its tree-lined streets and mostly single-family Victorian houses were once home to an experimental utopian community that attracted notable writers Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne and Henry David Thoreau. Today, West Roxbury is known for its civic activism and youth programming including youth athletic leagues. Residents flock to Millennium Park, a 100-acre green space with trails, ball fields, and picnic areas. Centre Street is the main thoroughfare of the neighborhood's business district and it offers a delightful mix of West Roxbury's past and present. Old neighborhood mainstays like the Roche Bros. supermarket and traditional Irish Pubs are joined by a host of budding businesses, namely a wide range of new ethnic restaurants including Indian, Thai, Lebanese, Greek, and Italian cuisine.
