Situated at the mouth of the Merrimack River, about 45 minutes north of Boston, Newburyport was once a fishing, shipbuilding, and shipping center. Today it is home to artists, writers, performers, and is a popular tourist destination. Although Newburyport is a modern city, many traces of the past can still be found. Old Victorian homes, Federal mansions and Colonial houses are still cherished today. High Street, in particular, is a remarkable street of fine old Federal-style homes. Other points of interest include the city's historic waterfront, Atwood Park located in the south end of Newburyport, and the recently restored City Hall.
