Newbury is a coastal town located near the towns of West Newbury and Newburyport, and approximately 35 miles north of Boston. Like West Newbury, Newbury is a rural, residential community characterized by open views of farmland and historic Colonial architecture.
Newbury includes the villages of Old Town, also known as Newbury Center, Byfield and part of Plum Island. The village of Byfield consists of residential homes, a few local businesses as well as the Newbury town library and Triton Regional High School, which also serves the towns of Salisbury and Rowley. Byfield is also home to The Governor's Academy, an independent school established in 1763, making it the United States' oldest continuously-operating independent boarding school. The village of Plum Island is located on the island of the same name. A popular and historic vacation destination, Plum Island is much loved by its summer and year-round residents.
