The Southern Coast

The Southern Coast is Maine's most developed region, stretching north from Kittery to just below Portland. Visitors and residents alike are enamored of the area's miles of sandy beaches, which invite long walks along the shore and offer sweeping views of lighthouses, forested islands, and the wide open sea. The towns along the coast cater to visitors with many shops, restaurants and lodging establishments ranging from full service resorts to restored B&B's. Some of the nicest residential areas are York, Ogunquit, Wells, Kennebunk and Kennebunkport. For purposes of searching for listings, note that the Southern Coast is York County.

Greater Portland

Portland is Maine's largest and most cosmopolitan city and balances its role as a working, and still thriving, harbor with its newer identity as a center of sophisticated shopping, upscale restaurants and stylish accommodations. The city boasts an active and varied cultural scene, with numerous theater groups, dozens of impressive art galleries and a grand art museum. Attractive residential suburbs include Cape Elizabeth, Yarmouth and Falmouth, as well as a number of small quaint islands, just a short ferry ride from downtown Portland. The Greater Portland area is Cumberland County.

Sandy Beach, Ogunquit

Sebago Lake Region

Sebago Lake, meaning great stretch of water in the language of the Native Americans, is eight miles wide and eleven miles long. It is the second largest lake in Maine and the third largest in New England. Because of its exceptional clarity, purity and abundance, Sebago Lake water feeds the nearby city of Portland, which is about 30 miles to the southeast. The major towns in this region include Windham, Raymond, Casco, Sebago, Naples, Frye Island and Bridgton. Recreation in the Sebago Lake area revolves around outdoor activities, with boating, fishing and swimming heading the list. This region is also located in Cumberland County.

The Mid-Coast Region

North of Portland, from Brunswick to Monhegan Island, is the area known as the Mid-Coast. In this area, the coastline swirls and winds its way around peninsulas, sheltered harbors and waterways. Towns in this area include Freeport, Brunswick, Bath and Boothbay Harbor. The Mid-Coast region includes the counties of Cumberland, Lincoln and Sagadohoc.

The Penobscot Bay Region combines lively coastal towns with dramatic natural scenery. Camden anchors the area and is considered by some to be Maine's most picture-perfect town, with tall church steeples, well maintained antique homes and a beautiful harbor. Towns in addition to Camden include Rockport, Rockland and St. George. This region is Knox County.

Mount Desert Island is famous as the location of Acadia National Park, Maine's most visited attraction. It is also home to attractive residential areas including Bar Harbor, Southwest Harbor, Bass Harbor and many outlining islands. This region is Hancock County.

Belgrade Lakes Region

The Belgrade Lakes region, located northwest of Augusta, is one of Maine's premier inland resort areas. It is said to have inspired the classic movie "On Golden Pond." The Belgrade Lakes consist of seven connected bodies of water, including Great Pond, Long Pond, Snow Pond, East Pond, North Pond, McGrath Pond and Salmon Lake. This region is Kennebec County.
