In a dense nine block area between Chinatown and the Financial District are 19th century brick warehouses that once housed Boston’s leather industry. Today these old leather factories have been transformed into a distinct neighborhood of commercial store fronts and loft-style residences that is fittingly called the Leather District. The “LD” as the area is sometimes called, is characterized by huge, ground floor display windows set in sturdy cast iron columns topped by stories of open-floor plans and high ceilings. These historic buildings were originally designed to provide the leather industry and related wholesalers with space for display, offices and work areas. Today they are homes, restaurants and shops. Residents of this of this dense 9 block area enjoy “loft living” in an area that boasts historic appeal and 21st century amenities. Great restaurants, cafés, and shopping destinations as well as the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway are close at hand.
