Duxbury, a beautiful colonial town on the South Shore, and is about a 33 mile commute from Boston. This peaceful and aristocratic town, filled with wealthy sea captains' homes, was settled in 1627 by Myles Standish. The Town was a center of shipbuilding until the mid-nineteenth century when ships became too large for the shallow bay. It's long and winding Main Street is a delight to drive on, as many historic homes from the Pilgrim period line each side.
Duxbury has an extensive 9-mile coastline which is a major, unspoiled, recreational asset and its bay supports an active shellfish industry. Duxbury also has one of the loveliest beaches on the South Shore, but this beach in the summer is only accessible to local residents or visitors who come on their bikes.
Today, about 15,007 residents live in Duxbury. Many work in Boston, but enjoy that their families can benefit from the town's excellent schools, outstanding community services and pleasant residential atmosphere. The town supports three commercial areas: one area west of Rte 3 has a series of major stores and shopping centers. The other two commercial areas are east of Rte 3 and are within walking distance of many of the homes. These shopping areas are small with locally run shops and restaurants, and help make Duxbury such a lovely community to live in or visit.
